So what is the difference between branded parts, such as the ones we use - and unbranded parts contained in computers you may see going cheap on an online auction or sold down the pub?

Quite simply - unbranded parts are much cheaper and a lot less reliable - for example a stick of unbranded memory looks the same as a branded stick of Kingston memory that we use,  but there is a lot of difference.

With unbranded memory, more often than not at some point around 60% is returned as faulty. With branded memory such as Kingston - you are lucky if you get a faulty piece.
